We try to let as many fifth graders as possible become patrols. There are three types of patrols: kindergarten, crossing
guards and bus patrols. Kindergarten patrols walk the afternoon kindergarten students to Diamond Path. This takes place between
12:45 P.M. and 1:10 P.M., so they do have to miss about 15 minutes of class time, one day each month. The students that they
walk to school will be within one half mile of Diamond Path, and they will always have at least one other patrol member going
with them.
Crossing guards, patrol at the cross walks at the corners of Dominica and 147th Street and Drake Path and 144th Street.
They enable walkers to get to school and home again safely and are on duty from 8:55 A.M. until 9:10 A.M. in the morning and
3:45 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. in the afternoon. Once again, they are not alone as they work in teams of two, three, or four students.
When they are on duty, they will go Friday afternoon to Friday morning, one week per month.
The bus patrols "assist" the driver with his or her efforts to maintain control on the bus and may also be called upon
to flag so children are able to cross the street at their bus stops. They are in no way responsible for disciplining other
students. That's the driver's responsibility, not that of students. Patrols should never try to overstep their job responsibilities.
When they do, they have a tendency to intimidate the younger student, and that's not what being a patrol is all about. They
act as a liaison and a helper.
As rewards, patrols are able to take field trips to Skateville, the Shrine Circus, and the Park at the Mall of America.
Patrols are looked up to by many of the younger students, so they need to act as good role models and reflect our school
in a positive way to the community.
